Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a wonderful country although it is very expensive. We tried our best to minimize costs with the following itinerary :

1 Day: Arrive in Airport of San Jose

We arrived at the airport San Jose at 6:50 pm. The airport is located in Alajuela. At the airport exit 100 meters ahead caught the direct bus to San Jose.

Night: Hotel Bristol in San José

2 Day: Public bus to Tortuguero

We walked to the Terminal Gran Caribeños bus to take the bus from 6 am to Cariari. The bus took 2 hours. In Cariari we caught the bus from 9 am to La Pavona (the trip takes about 1 hour). So we got to La Pavona caught the boat to Tortuguero (take 1 hour).

Tortuguero is magnificent, beautiful. We see on the internet that it was advisable to hire gui to make jungle treks. However it does not pay, the only tour that much worth is the canoe. We pay 20usd per person. The walking tours can be made by ourselves, so we did.

We walked all afternoon for Tortuguero and the beach. We not swim because the sea has sharks, still saw local children to swim at the beach.

Looking for coconuts in Tortuguero
Night: Cabinas Meryscar

3 Day: Tortuguero

In the morning we tour the canoe. We saw very animals.

When finish the tour walk of GALVIAN unknowingly. This hike, say the guides, are closed for over 20 years, however've seamlessly passing people there. Worth it. It is advisable to use rubber boots.

At night we did the night tour, but we did not see many animals.

Night: Cabinas Jerry

5 Day: Cerro Chato Volcano and River Fortuna Waterfall

To arrive at Cerro Chato must follow the same path toward the waterfall of the river Fortuna. The walk there is approximately 1h. Can you walk or take a taxi, we were walking, we upset at 5: 30h am. Once there we have the option or go to the waterfall or climb the Cerro Chato. Each costs 10 usd entry. We went to the Cerro Chato. The road is hard. At first it's quiet, but when he enters the woods, is always rising. About 2: 30h to reach the lake and 1: 50h to descend. Before reaching the lake has gazebo where you see the Arenal volcano. The descent to the lake is also very hard, is climbing type, has strings to support. We bathed in the lake. Descend to the park entrance and go to the waterfall in the river Fortuna. More $ 10. Down the stairs tie the Cascade. In Cascade can swim, take sandals not to cut the feet.

We walked back to rent a car Alamo to lift the car for the next day to visit the Arenal Volcano, Volcano Tenorio and Rio Celeste. We made online reservation, paid about 50usd one day, but it's cheaper to go by taxi to hire a tour for 2 people.

Night: Cabinas Jerry

6 Day: Tenorio Volcano, River Celeste and Arenal Volcano

Drove to the Volcano Tenorio Park is made easy with a google map. We arrived early, the park was still closed. The trail is easy, but it has a lot of mud. The first attraction is the Rio Celeste Waterfall and to get close to have to go down a staircase. The combination of calcium carbonate with sulfur is responsible for fantastic color such waters. Walking a little arrive to a viewpoint where you can see the Tenorio Volcano and the end of the track the meeting of the waters that form the Rio Celeste, where you can clearly see the color change

Then we drive to the Arenal Volcano Park. The walk in the park is easy, but spectacular. At the end we return to La Fortuna where we deliver the car. Pays rent the car for one day, because there are no buses to the Volcano Tenorio Park, the taxis are very expensive and tours for the two sites also leave more expensive.

Night: Cabinas Jerry

Night: Cabinas Monteverde Paraiso

9 Day: Monteverde / Manuel Antonio

We take the bus to Puntarenas and then Quepos and Manuel Antonio finally. This afternoon we took the beach of Manuel Antonio outside the park.
At night we went by bus to a market in Quepos buy fruit and vegetables. Manuel Antonio is much more expensive

Night: El Faro Beach Hostel

10 Day: Manuel António Nacional Park

This hostel is the cheapest ption we found near the park. The park does not open on Monday and it's always good to be on time to open because then it gets crowded turistas.10 dollars is the cost of entry. The park has three beaches: Playa Espadilla Sur, Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Puerto Escondido. On 1 day gives to know all. The most beautiful is Playa Manuel Antonio, and between it and Espadilla Sur has a small track with some sights that are worth.

 Night: El Faro Beach Hostel

11 Day: Manuel António / Puerto Jiminez

We caught the first bus to Manuel Antonio Quepos. Quepos to Dominical. after Chacarita and finally Puerto Jiminez. That night we stayed at the hostel to arrange the much cheaper time that our reservation. I do not remember the name. Not worth book, Puerto Jiminez has many inexpensive options at the time. There are not many tourists. After leaving the backpacks at the hostel we went for a walk, see the crocodiles are in a swamp type, a person there told us. And take a dip at the beach. Puerto Jiminez is charming, has little infrastructure, the roads are unpaved, has many birds (macaws and toucans) and few tourists.

Night: Puerto Jiminez

12 Day: Bolita Hostel

To visit the Corvovado National Park requires an organized tour, so we found the Bolita which is a hostel in the jungle with hiking self guided around. It's spectacular, it was one of the highlights of the trip. Early morning picked up the van publishes for Dos Brazos. In the hostel of Puerto Jiminez say the time and place. In Doz Brazos is located the office of Bolita Hosel who gave us directions to get to Bolita. It is a unique experience. In the afternoon we did self guided hikes and decobrimos an entry pora Corcovado National Park, but as it was getting late we thought to return the next day.

Night: Bolita Hostel

13 Day: Bolita Hostel

We made the other self guided trails, we saw some animals. At the end of the walk we return to the entrance of Corcovado we had discovered the day before. The trail follows into the park and is clearcut, but Despois to walk some time we return. They told me a lot of scary stories that left us full of fear. Since very poisonous snakes that kill in minutes, and the possibility of getting lost. entering the park without a guide it is prohibited due to several cases of people who disappeared in the park. We came back to Bolita.

14 Day: Bolita / San José

We left the night Bolita with lanterns in hand to reach the Brazos on time to catch the first van to Puerto Jiminez. Puerto Jiminez picked up the only bus there to San Jose. We came to San Jose already late afternoon, caught taxi to the hotel.

Night: Hotel Bristol

15 Day: Flight to home

We walk to the bus station and take the bus to the airport.

End of our trip.

Our trip to Costa Rica was in February 2016. Costa Rica is an expensive country. Tried our best to minimize costs with our itinerary , however this trip 2 weeks equaled the three weeks costs in China .
